SPORT RULES:  BASKETBALL 5-ON-5 for Women's, Men's, and Co-ed (Bakar Fitness & Recreation Center)
Recreational Sports provides a fun, fair, and safe environment for everyone who plays. Our rules are based upon the national governing bodies for each sport (such as NCAA, USVA, etc.) There are some university-specific rules, so please read closely.

PLAYERSback to top 
A.  A team will consist of five (5) players. . Men: 5 on 5; Women's : 5 on 5; and Co-ed 5 on 5 with a minimum of 2 women. A game may start and be completed with as few as four (4) players. In co-ed league: 4 players with at least two of them being a women.
B.  Additional players may be added to the score sheet and enter the game as they arrive (during a dead ball). New players must first pay the appropriate fee and be added to the roster before playing.
C.  A player may only play for one team in each Division. No exceptions.
D.  Players/Participants must present their league card and a valid University of California, San Francisco Student ID, UCSF Employee ID, Fitness & Recreation Membership ID or a Drivers License with picture ID will be accepted before each contest in order to participate. Picture identification checks occur before every Recreational Sports contest. Failure to provide an acceptable form of identification will result in not being allowed to participate in Recreational Sports on that day. Absolutely no exceptions will be made.
E.  All Non-members and General Public participants must have a valid league card to participate in UCSF Recreational Sports Leagues. League Cards are obtained from the Recreational Program Supervisor during the Captains Meeting. If a league card is lost or misplaced, there is a $5.00 fee to replace the card.
FORFEITSback to top 
A.  If a team does not meet the minimum number of eligible players 10 minutes after the scheduled game time, that team will forfeit the game.
B.  If neither team has the minimum number of eligible players to start or finish a game, both teams shall receive a forfeit.
C.  Teams that forfeit a contest without giving at least 48 hours notice to the Recreational Sports Supervisor will be charged a forfeit fee. This is to ensure that all teams have an opponent each week.
D.  The team which forfeited will receive a 3 as their SOG rating. The SOG rating will be changed to a 4 once the forfeit fee is paid. If the team has notified the office, then they will receive a 4.5 SOG rating for the match.
E.  The forfeit fee is $30 per forfeit. Forfeit fees must be paid at the Fitness & Recreation Service Desk before the team's next match (usually 7 days) or else they will not be allowed to play their next scheduled match. A reciept of payment must be presented to the Recreational Sports staff before the game.
F.  A third forfeit within the same sport may result in that team being dropped from league play and an additional forfeit fee charged.
G.  Forfeits may affect playoff seeding. A team with three forfeits will not be allowed to play in the playoffs.
CAPTAIN'Sback to top 
A.  The captain is the representative of the team and may address an official on matters of interpretation or to obtain essential information, when it is done in a courteous manner.
B.  Before the 10-minute mark is reached on the game clock that is counting down the time before the start of the game, each team shall supply the scorers with: a. Names and uniform numbers of all team members who may participate, and those of the five starting players.
SUBSTITUTIONSback to top 


A.  In the Backcourt: After a basket is made, the new offensive team has the option of making a substitution. If the offensive team elects to make a substitution, the defensive team may also make a substitution. If the new offensive team elects not to make a substitution, the defensive team does not have the option of making a substitution. Team must notify scorekeeper or referee about substitutions before inbounding the ball
B.  In the Forecourt: Substitutions shall be made only when the ball is dead (any whistle).
C.  Foul Shots: Either team may substitute if an official is informed and has not given the ball to the shooter. No substitutes will be allowed for a shooter in free throw situations, unless the player is injured and unable to continue.
D.  Substitutions shall not be permitted after successful field goals in the last 59.9 seconds of the second half or any extra period. A team may request a timeout and then insert substitutions any time the ball is dead and the game clock is stopped.
E.  During time-outs: Either team may substitute.
  Note: Excessive substitutions in an attempt to kill the clock will result in a warning, followed by a technical foul if team continues to violate rule.

A.  All games shall be governed by current NCAA Basketball rules, except where special UCSF Recreational Sports rules apply
B.  Time-outs: Each team is given four 60-second time-outs. Time-outs carry into overtime. No additional timeouts will be awarded for overtime periods.
C.  Length of the game:
  1. Games are two 20-minute halves (running time).
  2. Prior to the last minute of a game, the clock will stop only for time-outs (team and official) and injuries.
  3. During the last minute of the second half, the clock will stop on all made baskets unless one team is leading by 10 or more points.
  4. During the last thirty seconds of the first half, the clock will stop on all dead balls including made baskets.
  5. A three minute half-time will separate each half.
  6. In the event of a tie at the end of regulation play, an overtime period of two minutes will be played. If the game is still tied, the first team to score will be determine the winner. During the last minute of any overtime period, the clock will stop on all whistles and made baskets. No additional time-outs will be given for overtime periods.
D.  JUMP BALLS
  1. A jump ball will be administered to start the game and for any overtime period.
  2. Alternating possessions will be awarded in all other jump ball situations and to start the second half-in which the team that did not start with the ball will have possession
E.  OUT OF BOUNDS
  1. Officials touch the ball only in the offensive end of the court.
  2. Players have five seconds to inbound the ball.
  3. A ball striking the basket supports is out of bounds. A ball going over the top of the backboard or hitting braces is out of bounds. Balls hitting the sides or bottom of the backboard are in bounds.
F.  FOULS
  1. All team fouls occurring without a made basket leave the ball with the offensive team on the sideline (foul line extended) for a throw-in.
  2. If a foul occurs during a two-point shot attempt: Two free throws will be awarded to the shooter.
  3. If a foul occurs during a three-point shot attempt: Three free throws will be awarded to the shooter.
  • During Bonus or Penalty:
    1. If a team has seven or more fouls in a half, it is a one-and-one free throw for the other team. If a team has 10 or more fouls per a half, it is two free throws for the other team.
  • Technical Fouls
    Penalty: Opposite team receives two free throws.
    1. Unsportsmanlike: A foul which involves unsportsmanlike behavior of any sort, including profanity, obscene gestures, abusive and/or obscene language, or disrespectful behavior toward officials, players, spectators, Recreational Sports Staff.
    2. A player who receives an unsportsmanlike technical foul must be substituted. The player may return to the game on the next dead ball. It the team does not have any substitutions, they must play short-handed. If the team is already playing with only four players, the player may stay in the game.
    3. Rule Violation: Such as playing with jewelry, kicking the ball, illegal substitution, hanging on rim, etc.
    4. Technical fouls are counted as team fouls.
    5. Two Unsportsmanlike technical fouls on the same player in a game will result in automatic ejection.
    6. Three unsportsmanlike technical fouls on the same team will result in the game being forfeited by that team.
  • Intentional Fouls
    An intentional foul is one which "does not appear to be a legitimate attempt to play the ball". This has been expanded to include a player causing "excessive contact" (hard foul) while playing the ball.
    Penalty: Team will shoot two free throws and ball at half court.
  • Flagrant Fouls
    Dangerous play with no attempt to play ball.
    Penalty: Team will shoot two free throws and ball at half court; player is ejected.
  • G. Positions During Free Throw Attempt
    1. When a free throw is awarded, an official shall take the ball to the free-throw line of the offended team.
    2. After allowing reasonable time for players to take their positions, the official shall put the ball in play by placing it at the disposal of the free-thrower.
    3. For men, a maximum of six players (four opponents of the free-thrower and two teammates of the free-thrower) shall be permitted on the free-throw lane during a free throw. All other players shall be behind the free-throw line extended and behind the three-point field-goal line.
      a. (Men)Within this limit, opponents of the free-thrower may occupy the third lane space (with the spot closest to the end line being the first). If they opt not to, a teammate of the free-thrower may occupy the third space. No player shall occupy the fourth space.
    4. (Women) A maximum of six players (four opponents of the free- thrower and two teammates of the free-thrower) shall be permitted on the lane. All other players shall be behind the free-throw line extended and behind the three-point field-goal line.
      a. The two lane spaces closest to the end line shall remain open.
      b. The first space on each side of the lane that is closer to the free-throw line after the block is designated for an opponent of the free-thrower. The next lane space on each side of the lane is designated for a teammate of the free-thrower. The next available space on each side of the lane is designated for an opponent of the free-thrower.
    5. Teammates of the free-thrower shall not occupy lane spaces designated for opponents of the free-thrower; opponents of the free-thrower shall not occupy lane spaces designated for teammates of the free-thrower.
    ADDITIONAL RECREATIONAL SPORTS RULE VARIATIONSback to top 
    A.  There will be no five-second closely guarded violation while dribbling (still called for a held ball).
    B.  The game clock will stop after a basket is made during the last minute of the second half, except if one team is ahead by more than 10 points.
    PLAYER/COACH CONDUCTback to top 
    All players and spectators are expected to participate within the Spirit of the Game standards established by Recreational Sports
    A.  Team captains, managers/coaches are responsible for the conduct of their players AND fans.
    1. Only the captain is allowed to address the officials during play.
    B.  Acts of unsportsmanlike conduct including unnecessary roughness, arguing with officials, fighting, abusive language directed towards officials/opponents will result in the player(s) involved being ejected from the game.
    C.  Any player ejected from a game will be ineligible to participate in any Recreational Sports activity until s/he meets with the Recreational Sports Supervisor.
    D.  If a Recreational Sports Official or Supervisor feels a game needs to be terminated due to unsportsmanlike behavior, one or both teams will be charged with a forfeit and may be dropped from the league. Teams dropped from the league will not be issued a refund or credit.
    ADDITIONAL POLICIESback to top 
    A.  Non-marking court shoes and athletic wear are required. Running shoes and non-court shoes are not allowed.
    B.  Teams must supply their own reversible numbered jerseys. One side must be white, and the other dark. Teams must have their own jerseys by the third week of league play, otherwise their SOG score will be lowered.
    C.  Players should only be listed on the game sheet if they are at the game. Players listed on the game sheet will be assumed to have played.
    D.  Players may begin to warm up after the preceding game is finished.
    E.  No food or beverages are allowed on the gymnasium floor.
    F.  No alcohol will be allowed in the gymnasium.
    G.  No dunking is allowed in the league. Any players that dunks will get an automatic technical foul.
